Abstract

This research has an aim to identify the constituents and the structures of the verb phrase used in Indonesian national anthem. This research belongs to descriptive qualitative research method. The data are verb phrases in the song. They were analyzed to reveal their constituents and structures, based on X-bar theory (Noam Chomsky, year). Based on the analysis, it is identified there are 8 types of VP structures. Those are VP = V (occurring in 3 instances,15%), in which the constituents are NP as its subject and VP as its predicate; VP = V + NP (occurring in 3 instances, 15%), in which the constituents are NP as the subject, V as the head of verb and NP as the object; VP = V + Adv. P (occurring in 3 instances, 15%), in which the constituents are NP as the subject, V as the head of the VP and Adv. P as the adjunct and the modifier of the VP; VP = V + Adv. P + VP1 (occurring in 2 instances, 10%), in which the constituents are NP as the subject, V as the head of the VP, Adv. P as the complement of the VP, and VP1 as the infinitival VP; VP = Adv. + V + NP(occurring in 3 instances, 15%), in which the constituents are Adv. as the modifier of the V and NP as the subject; VP = V + NP + VP + NP (occurring in 2 instances (10%), in which the constituents are V1 as the head of VP1 and NP1 as the object of VP1, V2 as the head of VP2 and NP2 as the complement of VP2; VP = V1 + NP + V2 (occurring in 3 instances 15%), in which the constituents are NP as the object of the VP and V2 represents the action being caused to happen.; VP = V + NP1 + NP2 + PP + NP3 (occurring in 1 instance,5%), in which the constituents are V as the verb of VP, NP as the complement of VP and PP as the adjunct of VP. The study highlights the syntactic variety within English verb phrase constructions, shedding light on their structural roles and frequency in natural language usage.
