Abstract
This study aims to determine the effect of volume fraction of pineapple and jute
fiber composites in unidirectional fiber orientation on the tensile strength and
impact toughness of composite materials. The experiment employs pineapple leaf
fiber and jute stem fiber, along with Yukalac 157 BQTN-EX polyester resin as the
matrix. The composites were manufactured using the hand lay-up technique.
Initially, the resin was poured into the mold, followed by the preparation of the
fibers in accordance with the calculated composition and the pouring of the
remaining resin. Subsequently, mechanical and morphological testing was
conducted. The mechanical testing comprised a tensile test, the objective of which
was to ascertain the strength and intrinsic characteristics of the material, and a
Charpy impact test, the purpose of which was to evaluate the strength, hardness,
and resilience to impact energy absorption. The morphological tests entail a macro
photo analysis of cross-sectional fractures resulting from mechanical testing. The
findings revealed that the highest tensile strength was observed in the jute fiberreinforced
polyester resin composite at a volume fraction of 9:91, with a value of
69.45 MPa. Similarly, the highest impact strength was observed in the pineapple
fiber-reinforced polyester resin composite at a composite volume fraction of 12:88,
with a value of 0.00700326 J/mm². An analysis of the fracture cross-section
revealed that the material exhibited brittle behavior under both tensile strain and
impact loading. In conclusion, these results highlight the considerable influence of
varying volume fractions and unidirectional fiber orientation on the tensile and
impact strength of the composites.
