Abstract

Learner needs to have motivation and a reason for action. Foreign language learners should be offered the opportunity to be motivated in learning. The aim of this research was to find out whether students on first semester of English education department at Muhammadiyah University of Purwokerto Academic Year 2014/2015 were instrumentally or integratively motivated in learning English. This research used descriptive method. The data was collected by using questionnaires as the instruments which consists of twelve open-ended questions. The writer determined the sample by using random sampling. The number of sample was 60 students. The result of study showed that the most frequently type of motivation that was used by students was instrumental motivation. It was proved by the mean score of instrumental was 3.06, while mean score of integrative motivation was 2.65. In conclusion, the instrumental motivation was higher than integrative motivation.
