Abstract
This study, titled "History of Sanggar Seka in the Preservation of
Traditional Gamelan Art in Watukumpul Village, Pemalang Regency (1995-
2016)," aimed to (1) understand the background of the establishment of Sanggar
Seka Watukumpul in Watukumpul Village; (2) understand the development of
Sanggar Seka Watukumpul in Watukumpul Village; (3) identify the challenges and
efforts of Sanggar Seka Watukumpul in preserving the traditional art of Gamelan
in Watukumpul Village. The method employed was the historical method, which
included four research steps: (1) Heuristics, source collection using interview,
observation, and documentation techniques; (2) Criticism, source examination
divided into two, external criticism (verifying the authenticity of sources) and
internal criticism (examining the credibility of the source content); (3)
Interpretation of data; and (4) Historiography or history writing. The results of
this research were: (1) Sanggar Seka Watukumpul was established in 1995 by
Pracoyo, Darsono, and Winarno based on the desire for traditional art,
particularly Gamelan, to be played by the native people of Watukumpul Village
and for its existence to be preserved; (2) Sanggar Seka Watukumpul had two
periods of management: the first period from 1995-2007, chaired by Pracoyo,
during which Sanggar Seka Watukumpul performed various shows in different
areas around Watukumpul Village. The second period from 2007-2016, chaired
by Darsono, during which Sanggar Seka Watukumpul collaborated with other
traditional arts and conducted outreach to schools until activities in Sanggar Seka
Watukumpul ceased due to a lack of members; (3) Efforts made included
increasing interest among the younger generation, improving available facilities,
continuously promoting and collaborating with various parties. Challenges faced
included a lack of facilities and infrastructure, inadequate funding, insufficient
government support, an unorganized management structure, and a lack of interest
from the younger generation.
