Abstract
This research employs semiotic, expressive, and cinematography approaches to analyze DPR IAN's "So I Danced" music video, aiming to identify, interpret, and contextualize the semiotic signs, symbols, and visual elements therein. The study contributes to understanding DPR IAN's creative process and the nuanced meanings conveyed within the video, illuminating its artistic intentions and cultural significance. The study utilizes Barthes' semiotic theory, Abrams' expressive approach, and Deren's cinematography analysis to explore how music videos convey messages and artistic depth. Semiotics, drawing from Saussure and Barthes, examines literal and cultural signification, revealing how objects and ideologies shape collective understanding. The expressive approach delves into the artist's thoughts and emotions expressed through narrative elements, while cinematography analysis scrutinizes visual techniques like framing and lighting to uncover artistic and narrative layers. The analysis of DPR IAN's "So I Danced" music video reveals a poignant portrayal of his battle with mental disorders, employing a multifaceted approach that integrates semiotic, expressive, and cinematographic strategies. Through semiotics, the video's signs and symbols are decoded, revealing layers of meaning that speak to both personal struggles and broader societal contexts. The expressive approach explores how DPR IAN's emotions and thoughts are conveyed through narrative elements and visual storytelling techniques, providing insight into the depth and complexity of his experiences during manic episodes. Meanwhile, cinematography analysis delves into the artistic choices of framing, lighting, and visual composition, which enhance the narrative's emotional impact and thematic resonance. By bridging these disciplines, the study contributes to ongoing conversations about mental health awareness and advocacy, using the music video as a powerful tool to foster empathy, challenge stereotypes, and promote a more compassionate understanding of mental health issues in society.
