Background: Hair loss can occur in everyone, both men and women, with
various causes. Based on ethnopharmaceutical studies, ylang ylang flower
(Cananga odorata) is a potential medicinal plant that can regulate sebum
secretion and stimulate hair growth. Methods: Ylang ylang flower simplicia
powder was extracted using the maceration method with ethanol filter fluid. The
extract and hair tonic were tested for hair growth activity in guinea pigs consisting
of normal control, blank, comparison, varying concentrations of ylang ylang
flower ethanol extract 0.8%, 1%, 2% and the preparation hair tonic optimum
ylang ylang flower ethanol extract. Hair measurements were carried out on days 2,
4, 6, 8, 10, 12 and 14 with the parameters of guinea pig hair length and weight.
Optimization of mixed solvents using classical methods and evaluation of
preparations using organoleptic parameters, pH and viscosity. Results: The
optimum concentration of ethanol extract of kenanga flower as hair growth
activity is a concentration of 2% with a length of 10.09 mm ± 0.01 weight 32.90
mg ± 1.25. The hair tonic preparation of ethanol extract of kenanga flower has the
greatest hair growth activity of guinea pigs compared to other treatment groups.
The hair tonic preparation has the longest hair growth activity, namely 8.98 mm ±
0.01 and a weight of 32.16 mg ± 0.87 compared to the comparison control, blank
control, and normal control. The optimum hair tonic preparation with a mixed
solvent of 70% ethanol, tween 80, and propylene glycol meets the requirements of
a good preparation. Conclusion: The ethanol extract of ylang ylang flowers and
the optimum hair tonic formula, the ethanol extract of ylang ylang flowers, have
activity as a hair growth stimulant.
