This research aims to figure out the preparedness of elementary schools in
the Kedungbanteng Sub-district to face volcanic eruptions. This was qualitative
research conducted at SD N 2 Kalisalak, SD N 2 Windujaya, and SD N 1
Windujaya. The research participants were 3 principals, 17 class teachers, and 15
fifth-grade students. The data were collected through interviews, observation, and
documentation. The results showed that, in terms of physical aspects/facilities and
infrastructure, the preparedness of elementary schools in the Kedungbanteng Subdistrict
was in the poor category. Emergency response facilities for volcanic
eruptions such as sirens, alarms, and evacuation routes as well as security like
bunkers, were not available at schools. School management and policies were also
still inadequate. There were no standard operating procedures for disaster and
coordination flow during a volcanic eruption. However, students' knowledge and
attitudes toward emergency response plans were rather good. The students already
knew the steps to take when a disaster occurs: they must be calm and ask for help
from older people.
