This study aimed to describe the types of cohesion and coherence discovered
in the description texts written by Seventh-grade students at SMP Negeri 1 Rowokele,
Kebumen Regency. This research was a qualitative descriptive study. The research
subjects were sentences within students' descriptive essays. The object of this study
was the markers of cohesion and coherence used by the students. Data collection was
conducted through reading and note-taking techniques. The main instrument was the
researcher, based on their knowledge of theories regarding cohesion and coherence
markers. This instrument was manifested with criteria that facilitate data analysis
and was assisted by the use of data cards. The research method used was qualitative
descriptive. The researcher collected data in the form of students' essays on
description texts. The results of this study are as follows; Grammatical cohesion
consistd of reference, substitution, ellipsis, and conjunction. Meanwhile, lexical
cohesion consisted of repetition, synonymy, antonymy, hyponymy, collocation, and
equivalence. The total number of cohesion instances found in the description texts for
Seventh-grade students at SMP Negeri 1 Rowokele was 140 data. The total number
of grammatical cohesion instances found was 98, while the total number of lexical
cohesion instances found was 42. The overall number of coherence instances found
in the description texts of 7th-grade students at SMP Negeri 1 Rowokele was 18 data
