Abstract

Indonesia is an archipelagic country rich in biodiversity of medicinal plants. Local people's knowledge on the medicinal plants is mostly orally passed. Utilization of plants for medicinal purposes varies from region to region. This study aims to study qualitative and quantitative ethnopharmacology and conduct phytotherapy studies of medicinal plants used by traditional midwives in four villages of Wanareja District. This research used a non-experimental design. The research used qualitative approach to interview informants with semi-structured technique. Quantitative approach was used to calculate species use-value (SUV), relative frequency of citation (RFC), and fidelity level (FL). Medicinal plants used by traditional midwives in Wanareja were of 46 species and 29 families, with leaf as the most commonly used plant part. Boiled and taken orally are the most widely used processing and route of uses by the community. Plants with the highest SUV were Zingiber officinale Roscoe, Zingiber officinale var. rubrum Theilade, Piper ornatum N.E.Br., Annona muricata L., and Artocarpus altilis (Parkinson). The highest RFC plants were Blumea balsamifera DC., Psidium guajava L., dan Strobilanthes crispa Blume. The FL of 100% was shown by Blumea balsamifera for appetite stimulants, Psidium guajava for diarrhea, and Zingiber officinale for cough and peptic ulcer. The local uses of Psidium guajava, Zingiber officinale, and Strobilanthes crispa was in accordance with the available phytotherapy evidence. Zingiber officinale is the most important and useful plant for local community, which was most trustworthy for cough and peptic ulcer indications.
