Abstract

This research aims to describe the improvement in student engagement in the
Indonesian language and learning outcomes achieved through the application of
Problem-Based Learning (PBL) for Grade VII A students at SMP Negeri 3
Bumiayu during the academic year 2022/2023. Additionally, it seeks to outline the
results of learning in the Indonesian language for the same group of students. The
research design adopted for this study is Classroom Action Research (CAR). The
subjects of this research consist of Grade VII A students at SMP Negeri 3 Bumiayu
during the academic year 2022/2023. The study focuses on the engagement and
learning outcomes of these students in the Indonesian language. Data collection
techniques utilized in this study include observation and tests. Observations are
carried out using a student engagement observation sheet, while tests are
employed to measure students' learning outcomes. This research is conducted over
two cycles, namely Cycle 1 and Cycle 2. Based on the findings and discussions
conducted throughout Cycle 1 and Cycle 2, it can be concluded that the
implementation of Problem-Based Learning (PBL) has led to an enhancement in
both student engagement and learning outcomes for Grade VII A students at SMP
Negeri 3 Bumiayu. Among the eight aspects used to assess student engagement,
nearly all aspects in Categories 1 and 2 (indicating lower engagement levels) have
shown a decrease from Cycle 1. Conversely, aspects categorized as 3 (indicating
good engagement) have exhibited an increase from Cycle 1. The average student
learning outcomes have also improved, increasing from 71 in Cycle 1 to 78 in Cycle
2. Furthermore, the students' learning outcomes have met the Minimum Mastery
Criteria (KKM) indicator, which is set at 73.
