Abstract

This research aims to determine the use of effective sentences in several news texts written by eighth-grade students at SMP Muhammadiyah 1 Purwokerto. The objective of this study is to provide information to readers about the utilization of effective sentences in news texts created by eighth-grade students at SMP Muhammadiyah 1 Purwokerto. The data in this research consist of effective sentence structures in news texts, extracted from eighth-grade students at SMP Muhammadiyah 1 Purwokerto. The data source is news texts written by eighth-grade students at SMP Muhammadiyah 1 Purwokerto. Data collection in this research employs literature review techniques and test studies. The research instruments used include analysis tables and news texts authored by the students. The data analysis techniques utilized in this study involve coding and scoring. The results indicate that the students' ability to use effective sentences is relatively good, with a comprehension level reaching 80%. Out of the 16 students studied, only one exhibited a low comprehension level of 40%, and two had a comprehension level of 60%. The most frequent errors were observed in the use of prepositions, particularly in the usage of in, to, from, and than, as well as in the repetition of sentence subjects. Students still struggle to distinguish between separated instances of the preposition di and its use as a prefix combined with a word. Factors contributing to students' errors in using effective sentences include a lack of extensive vocabulary, the frequent use of spoken language in their daily lives, and difficulty in developing ideas.
