Abstract

Religious education on religious tolerance is undoubtedly essential to provide guidance to its followers on how to interact with believers of other religions. The role of teachers and schools in the process of religious education regarding religious tolerance includes teaching, educating, nurturing, guiding, and shaping character and personality, so that students transform into individuals who possess knowledge, intelligence, and dignity. One of the problems faced is when students eventually engage with society, as it is still the case that many religious communities understand particular religious texts that explicitly carry tones of subordination, marginalization, and hostility. The objective of this research is to understand the function of teaching faith and morality in instilling values of religious tolerance at SMK Muhammadiyah Sampang. This study employs qualitative research, with subjects including the School Principal, Islamic Education Teachers, and students of SMK Muhammadiyah Sampang. Data collection techniques encompass observation, interviews, and documentation. The collected data is descriptively analyzed through data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. This research demonstrates that the education and teaching of faith and morality by teachers at SMK Muhammadiyah Sampang yield positive results in enhancing students' awareness of the significance of religious tolerance through guidance and mentoring. Students are empowered to comprehend and internalize the values of tolerance in their daily lives. Islamic Education teachers at SMK Muhammadiyah Sampang employ appropriate teaching methods, such as exemplar-based and example-based methods, to effectively convey lessons on faith and morality. This approach provides a tangible illustration of how religious values can be applied in concrete life situations and inspires students to emulate the examples set by the Prophets and Messengers in practicing their religious lives.
