Abstract

This study investigated whether there was a correlation between English Public Speaking scores and learning interest. The participants in this study were the 5th-semester students of the English Language Study Program. This study adapted the questionnaire instrument to measure learning interest Darmawan (2015) used in his research and employed English public speaking scores. This research applied a quantitative approach with correlation analysis using the Pearson product-moment test. The Sig value indicated a significant correlation between English public speaking and learning interest (0.003 <0.05). The result that if students have high learning interest, they tend to have high public speaking English scores, and if students have low learning interest, they tend to have low public speaking English scores. This study argues that the indicator encompassing feeling pleasure, student engagement, interest, and attention may have contributed to the finding. Future research may further examine such dimensions as identification of the causality relationship between public speaking and interest in learning.
