This study describes batik grombyang as a distinctive feature of Pemalang
City, the profile of Griya Batik Arta Kencana (a batik house), the history of the
creation of batik grombyang, introduction to the motifs of batik grombyang, and
efforts to preserve batik grombyang in Pemalang City. The research also intends
to introduce one of the cultural heritages still being preserved in the city. Based
on the research problem and objectives, the study employed a historical method
by analyzing historical aspects. The stages of research using the historical method
are as follows: first, heuristic, which involves collecting sources; second,
criticism, which is divided into external and internal criticism; third,
interpretation, which involves interpreting and arranging data; and fourth,
historiography, which is the writing of history. The findings show that Pemalang
is a strategically located city in aregion with relatively warm weather due to its
proximity to Widuri Beach. The livelihoods of the local community include
farming, fishing, and trading. Some community members are entrepreneurs, such
as Griya Batik Arta Kencana, which has successfully created batik grombyang.
Batik grombyang is a type of batik from Pemalang, inspired by a local dish called
"nasi grombyang." The motifs of batik grombyang come in two variations: one
featuring people and the other featuring only the cart (gerobak). To preserve the
existence of batik grombyang as a distinctive feature of Pemalang, both the
government and the owners of Griya Batik Arta Kencana continue to uphold its
