Abstract

Background: Acne is an inflammatory disease of the skin caused by P. acnes
bacteria. One of the natural ingredients that has potential as an antibacterial
because of its flavonoid anthocyanin, tannin, and phenol content is butterfly pea
(Clitoria ternatea). This study aims to determine the concentration of butterfly
pea extract that can inhibit the growth of P. acnes bacteria when formulated as a
cream preparation, determine the effect of variations in the concentration of
stearic acid as an emulgator, and determine whether there is still antibacterial
activity of P. acnes after being formulated into a cream preparation. Methods:
The antibacterial activity test of extracts and preparations was carried out by
liquid dilution method combined with Total Plate Count (TPC). The physical
evaluation and stability of the cream preparation included organoleptic test,
homogeneity, pH, spreadability, adhesiveness, viscosity, and cycling test. Results:
Butterfly pea extract has antibacterial activity at a concentration of 0.9%. Physical
evaluation of the cream preparation showed qualified and stable results, except for
spreadability. After being formulated as a cream preparation, there was still P.
acnes antibacterial activity in the extract. Conclusion: Butterfly pea extract has
antibacterial activity due to the content of flavonoids anthocyanins, tannins and
phenols. Physical evaluation of the cream preparation showed that the cream
preparation had good physical properties and stability but did not meet the
requirements in the spreadability test after the cycling test. Variations in the
concentration of stearic acid as an emulgator affect the physical evaluation
because it shows significant differences in each formula. Butterfly pea extract still
has P. acnes antibacterial activity after being formulated into a cream preparation.
