Abstract

The study aimed at discussing the correlation between students' mastery of transititonal devices and students' speaking competence. The total sample taken for this study was 70 students of the tenth grade in a high school which is located in Purwokerto in the academic year of 2014/2015, by applying stratified random sampling. From the five indicators of speaking which had been evaluated, it was found that students still had problems in linguistic accuracy and pronunciation since errors and mistakes in pronuncing words, constructing, and connecting sentences were still encountered. As a result, the correlation of students' mastery of transitional devices and those two indicators was almost positive. On the contrary, the result of data analysis showed that there was a positive correlation between students' mastery of transitional devices and fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension indicators. In brief, the study revealed that there was a positive correlation between students' mastery of transititonaJ devices and students' speaking competence. However, the · correlation was very low since the product moment test result was lower than the value of r-table = 0.235 at the level of significance a=0.05 and the result was between 0.00 and 0.20.
