Abstract

Anxiety to speak is one of the factors that hinder students from participating in
speaking class. However, students must be able to overcome their speaking anxiety
in virtual speaking classes. This study examines students' speaking anxiety in
virtual speaking classes. This research uses quantitative descriptive as a research
method. In collecting data, the questionnaire became an instrument consisting of
fifteen statements. The research subjects were 54 third-semester students in English
Language Education Study Program. They were required to fill out a questionnaire
about speaking anxiety in virtual speaking classes via Google Form which was
distributed via Whatsapp. The results of this study were that students experienced
speaking anxiety in the moderate category in the types of communication
apprehension and fear of negative evaluation. Meanwhile, the high category of
speaking anxiety is in the type of test anxiety which is the main problem of students'
speaking anxiety in virtual speaking classes. The results of this study provide
information about students' speaking anxiety when virtual speaking classes are held
which can be used as a background for English lecturers to organize effective virtual
learning, especially in speaking classes. In addition, this study provides new ideas
as a research material related to anxiety of speaking in virtual classes and new things
about important related issues.
