This study aims to describe the diction and style of language in the 2020
Kompas selection of short stories. This research is in the form of a qualitative
descriptive study. The method used is content analysis of the short story, or the words
contained in the short story. The source of data in this study is a document collection
of short stories. The source of this data was obtained from selected short stories by
Kompas in the 2020 edition. The data collection techniques and instruments in this
study used the observe and note method. The listening method is a method of
providing data that is carried out by listening to the use of language using basic
techniques in the form of tapping techniques. Tapping the use of written language,
because researchers are dealing with the use of language in the form of written
language. The note-taking technique is to record several forms that are considered
relevant or included in the research of the use of language used in writing. The data
analysis method that has been collected is the agih method, the agih method is a
method in which the determining tool is the language itself. The data analysis
technique used in this study has three components, namely: (1) data reduction; (2)
data presentation; (3) drawing conclusions. Three components that are well
intertwined, namely before, during and after the implementation of data collection.
The results of this study are in the form of diction and style of language in a collection
of short stories. The diction used in this short story uses a lot of sense words or
utterances. Speech words are words that are often used in everyday life that are not
standard or informal. The use of language style in short stories also uses a lot of
language style about the directness of meaning. The style of language in this short
story is hyperbole, personification, pejorative.
