Abstract

Background: Free radicals accumulate in the body have an impact for the body. This
happens because free radicals can spread through any media. One way to prevent free
radicals is with antioxidants. One of the natural antioxidants obtained from plants that
contain flavonoids is green gendola fruit (Basella alba L.). This study was to determine the
total phenolic content and antioxidant activity of the methanol extract of green gendola
fruit. Method: Treatment of total phenolic levels, and collection of antioxidant activity
using the FIC (Ferrous Ion Chelating) method and the ABTS (2,2'-azino-bis-(3
ethylbenzothiazoline)-6-sulfonic Acid) method. Results: The results showed that the
methanol extract of green gendola fruit had a total phenolic content of 298.18 ± 49.01
mgGAE/g extract. Antioxidant activity test of green gendola fruit methanol extract using
the FIC method had an IC50 value of 235.13 μg/ml and methanol extract of green gendola
fruit using the ABTS method had an IC50 value of 43.75 μg/ml. Conclusion: methanol
extract of green gondola fruit has very strong antioxidant activity using the ABTS method
while the FIC method has weak antioxidant activity from methanol extract of green gondola
fruit.
