Abstract

Background: One of the causes of skin damage to the occurrence of skin cancer is exposure to UV rays. Sunscreen is a skin care product whose main function is to protect the skin from direct UV radiation. Antioxidants and natural sunscreens can be obtained from plants that contain flavonoids, one of which is basil leaves (Ocimum sanctum L). The purpose of this study was to see the effect of the concentration of basil leaf extract on the physical properties and activity of antioxidants and sunscreens in cream preparations. Method: Extraction was carried out by maceration method using 96% ethanol solvent. Determination of the value of sunscreen activity which includes %Te, %Tp and SPF. Results: The results showed that the activity of sunscreen formula 1, 2, and 3 had a %Te value of respectively 0,543%; 0,543%; 0,577% an has a %Tp value of respectively11,162%; 7,745%; 5,087% and has an SPF value of respectively 38,438; 39,345; 40,000. Conclusion: Ethanol extract of basil leaves has good sunscreen activity where the higher the concentration of ethanol extract of basil leaves, the %Te, %Tp and SPF values are better.
