Abstract

Juansita, Amarizky, 1809010018. 2023: An Analysis of Sociolect in “A Streetcar Named Desire” 1951 Movie Version. Undergraduate thesis for Sarjana Sastra Degree, English Literature Study Program, Faculty of Cultural Sciences and Communication, Universitas Muhammadiyah Purwokerto.

This research aims to analyze the sociolect spoken by different social classes found in “A Streetcar Named Desire” 1951 movie version. The method applied for this research is descriptive qualitative. The data is collected through observation and transcription. The data is analyzed using Holmes’ theory of sociolect. The objectives of this research are to describe the types of sociolect found in the movie, to explain the linguistics features of each type of sociolect found, and to describe the factors that influenced the use of sociolect by the characters in the movie.

The result of this research shows that from 76 units of analysis found, 22 units of analysis belong to standard dialect and 28 units of analysis belong to nonstandard dialect.

The linguistics features of standard dialect are grammatical form, dominated by 52 present tenses and the least is 3 conditional sentences; vocabulary, dominated by 28 adjectives and the least are 8 adverbs and 8 terms; pronunciation and intonation, contains well-articulated, rhoticity, and fall-rise intonations. The linguistics feature of nonstandard dialect are grammatical form, dominated by 51 interrogative sentences and the least is 3 future tenses; vocabulary, dominated by 16 addresses and the least are 4 slangs and 4 fillers; pronunciation and intonation, contains not well-articulated, non-rhoticity, and rising intonation.

Lastly, the influenced factors of the sociolect used by the characters are the Post Great Depression and Post World War II conditions in the United States in the 1940s and the socioeconomic condition of each character in the movie.
