Abstract

The research entitled the Effectiveness of Directed Reading strategy in Reading Comprehension for the eight grade students of SMP Negeri 8 Purwokerto. The aim of the research was to identify whether there were significant differences in reading comprehension between students who learned by using Directed Reading strategy and students who learned without using the Directed Reading strategy, to examined the effectiveness of Directed Reading strategy, to examined the effectiveness of Directed Reading strategy reading comprehension for the eight grade students of SMP Negeri 8 Purwokerto.
The method of research was by quasi-experimental. The research’s design was peretest, posttest and control group. The population of research was the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 8 Purwokerto consisting of eight classes. The determination of sampling technique was by simple class of VIII B as the control group ann the class of VIII A as the experimental group. Data collection was by tests such as pretest and posttest. The validity of the instrument used cotenten validity and question items validity. Validity and reability of question items was calculated by SPSS 19 computer program. From 50 question items, 50 items were eligible, and each pretest -posttest used 50 items. Data analysis technique was by t-test with the significance level of 5%. Analysis requirement test like normality test and homogeneity test were done before analyzing data. Testing by SPSS 19 for pretes and posttest data showed that there were normal distribution and homogeneous.
Based on the results of t-test scores, posttest control group and the experimental group obtained a value of 0,432 and p 0,005 (p<0,05). Related t-test results between prtest and posttest scores for experimental group obtained a value of 15,243 and p value of 0,000(p<0,05). The research showed that there was a significant differences in reading comprehension between students who learned by using directed reading strategy and students who learned without using the directed reading, so directed reading strategy in reading comprehension could be used effectively for the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 8 Purwokerto.
