Abstract

Background: Corticosteroids are steroid hormone derivatives produced by the adrenal glands. Corticosteroids are still widely used in many treatments because of their potent effect and rapid inflammatory reaction. The purpose of this research is to determine the pattern, rationality, and outcome of oral corticosteroid use in patients at Sumbang I Public Health Center from January to February 2021.Methods: This research is non-experimental with a descriptive observational design, in which data was collected prospectively from medical records and patient interviews. The populations were all patients who received oral corticosteroid drugs and met the inclusion criteria. The research sample obtained was 115 patients. The data were analyzed qualitatively based on literature such as the Handbook of Pharmacotherapy, Drug Information Handbook, British National Formulary, AHFS Drug Information, and ISO Pharmacotherapy. Results: The results showed that the most common use of oral corticosteroids was dexamethasone (46.98%), with the most common indication was inflammation (41,74%). Based on the accuracy, the oral corticosteroid used on 100% right patient, indication, drug, and dose. Although, the route of administration accuracy was 99.13%. The outcome of oral corticosteroid use is already good, which is shown by 45,22% of patients recovered and 54,78% in improvement. Conclusion: Most oral corticosteroid uses were rational. However, the utilization of oral corticosteroid was not the only determinant factor for outcome therapy because there were other factors in each individual that can trigger the patient's condition.
