Abstract

Online learning using Video Conferences makes students are more independent and it encourages students to be more active in lectures. They can make direct interaction with other friends and lecturer. However, there are also shortcoming in the use of Video Conferences such as the limitation of internet connection. This research aimed to find out students’ perception of online English classes using video conferences in 4th semester students at English Education Department of Universitas Muhammadiyah Purwokerto. This research was a survey research that used quantitative methods in analyzing the data. Data was obtained using questionnaire and interview. The respondents of this research were 57 students of 4th semester in English Education Department who were randomly selected from 3 classes, consist of class A, B, and C. The result from questionnaire showed that the students have positive perception of online English classes using video conferences with the percentage of 73.6%. The results are also supported by the interview with students emphasizing that online English classes using Video Conferences make it easier for students to interact with lecturers by expressing their opinions or asking questions. Besides that, Video Conferences also help the students in accepting and understanding the material given by the lecturer. However, sometimes problems often occur due to unstable internet connections.
