Abstract

This study aimed to describe the types of diction, types of word meanings, functions of
diction, and their implications for Indonesian language learning in senior high school.
This type of research was descriptive qualitative. The data in this study were dictions in
the psychological consultation rubric of the Nova tabloid in the July-November 2020
edition. The data source was the psychological consultation rubric on the Nova tabloid
in July-November 2020 edition. The data collection technique used the observation nonparticipatory
(SBLC) method and noting technique. The instrument used data recording
cards. The data analysis technique used the segmenting immediate constituents
technique (BUL), the dividing key-factors technique (PUP), and the content analysis
technique. The results showed that the diction used in the psychological consultation
rubric of the Nova tabloid in the July-November 2020 edition consisting of types of
diction, namely general words, special words, abstract words, concrete words, scientific
words, popular words, foreign words, jargon, and slang. Typical diction was found in
scientific words, foreign words, jargon, and slang. The types of word meanings found in
the psychological consultation rubric of the Nova tabloid in the July-November 2020
edition were denotative and connotative meanings. The distinctive meaning of the word
is found in the connotative meaning. The diction function was to symbolize ideas that
were expressed verbally, refine words or sentences, create the right atmosphere, form
the right style of expression of ideas, create good and correct communication, prevent
misunderstanding, and effectively achieve the communication targets. This research
gave implications for Indonesian learning in the twelfth grade of senior high school so
that students can understand the use of good and correct diction. Good understanding of
