Abstract

Background : Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is a significant cause of chronic morbidity and mortality worldwide. Irrational use of antibiotics leads to bacterial resistance to antibiotics. Based on the results of several studies, it was found that about 40-62% of antibiotics were misused. This study aimed to determine the rationality of using antibiotics with the gyssens method in COPD patients at the Banyumas Hospital. Methods : The research method is a observational descriptive research using retrospective data which is then analyzed using the Gyssens plot to see the rationale for using antibiotics. Results : The use of appropriate antibiotics (category 0) is 1 %, other antibiotics are more effective (category IVA) by 36%, other antibiotics are less toxic (category IVB) by 11%, other antibiotics are cheaper (category IVC) by 31%, there are other antibiotics with a narrower spectrum (category IVD) by 1%, prolonged use of antibiotics (category IIIA) by 4%, the use of antibiotics is too short (category IIIB) by 15%, and the use of antibiotics is not on time (category I) by 1%. Conclusion : The use of antibiotics in Banyumas Hospital is still irrational because only 1% falls into category 0 (appropriate use).
