Abstract
This research is motivated by several problems that exist in the Widyatama Cluster, Kemranjen Banyumas Regency, including the relatively low attendance of students to the library, relatively low general knowledge of students, relatively low awareness of students in reading activities, lack of parental attention in reading activities when at home. The aims of this study are 1) to describe the role of parents in providing an example for children's reading habits as students, 2) to describe what factors support and hinder the role of parents in setting an example for children's reading-loving character as students. The type of research used is qualitative research with case study method. The research location is in the Widyatama Cluster, Korwilcam, Dindik Kemranjen, Banyumas Regency. The time of the research is November 2021 to June 2022. The data collection technique uses observation, interviews, and documentation. Data analysis techniques consist of data collection, data reduction, data display, and drawing conclusions. The validity of the data with triangulation techniques. The conclusion of this study is that parents have not given maximum example to their children in this case as a model in reading activities, parental direction and guidance when at home about the importance of reading has been done, giving advice and reminding to read books, giving motivation to children when at home parents have done it in the form of advice, the attention given by parents has been done by accompanying children when studying/reading and communicating with the school, the availability of reading materials when at home is not adequate. Factors supporting the role of parents are that some parents always have time for their children when they are at home, the enthusiasm to give advice to always read books, pay attention to children and communicate with teachers at school, there is an interest and desire to read books in students, there are a sense of pleasure in children when reading books, students get a good experience when reading books. The inhibiting factor for parents is that parents do not have sufficient knowledge in providing examples of reading to children, parents' incompetence in mastering technology in the world of reading, parents only rely on media provided from school.
