Abstract
Fansubs are getting more prominent as people need quick, easy, and often free
solution for their films or movies translated to language they understand.
However, there is a concern on the quality of its translation because fansubs are
created by amateur translators who do not have legal certificate to do so.
This research is going to analyze a subtitle translation of TV series known as The
Legend of Korra with the purpose of finding the directive act, its translation
techniques, and its translation accuracy using qualitative approach.
The data used in this research were directive utterances and their Indonesian
translation taken from The Legend of Korra: Book 4 TV series. Data were gathered
through content analysis, then processed through descriptive qualitative method
according to Searle’s theory of speech act (1985) and Molina and Albir’s
translation technique theory (2002). The analyzing process were identifying,
assessing, classifying, interpreting and summarizing.
The findings indicate that request is frequently used to ask Korra to do something
directly while maintaining respect to her. For translation technique, establishing
equivalent is the most-used technique to get equal message. Finally, the accuracy
of the translation from the fansub is generally accurate even though it does not
receive a perfect score. With all these findings, the translation from fansub give a
good and understandable translation which makes it popular among people who
like to watch movies downloaded from internet.
