Abstract
This study aimed to describe the ability of mathematical connections based on student learning autonomy at SMP Negeri 2 Bojongsari. This was a qualitative descriptive study. The subjects were six students selected by using the purposive sampling technique based on student learning autonomy and were grouped into three categories. They were the high learning autonomy category, moderate learning autonomy category, and low learning autonomy category. Afterward, two students were chosen to represent each category. The instruments of data collection were learning autonomy questionnaires, mathematical connection ability tests, and interview guidelines. Then, Miles and Huberman's data analysis techniques were used including data reduction, data display, and drawing conclusions. In addition, the triangulation technique was used to validate the data. The results showed that (1) students with the high learning autonomy category were able to master some indicators, such as recognizing and using the connection of the concepts in one material, identifying and using mathematical connection concepts in the materials, and applying mathematical concepts in real life; (2) students with moderate learning autonomy category could master some indicators, such as recognizing and using connection concepts in one material, identifying and using the mathematical connection concept in the materials; (3) students with low learning autonomy category could only master one indicator, namely identifying and using the mathematical connection concepts in the materials.
