The civilization of Maruyung mountain has its own history where the place is often known as Bumi Sagandu. It has a unique historical heritage including physical and non-physical such as statues and natural springs. Established in the area of Cilacap regency, the civilization is influenced by two great cultures which were Sundanese and Javanese.
This research aimed to find out the history of Maruyung Mountain and its civilization, the factors behind the establishment of the civilization, and the historical heritage of Maruyung mountain. It was expected that when the research was done, people would love and be proud of the history especially the ones in their own place. Then, the researcher was willing to show and prove that there had been a great and developed civilization in the area of Cilacap regency from long ago. Last but not least, the researcher was willing to store the results in a book form to make it easy to find and acknowledged by the public so it could be legally protected and categorized as a national history. This research offered theoretical and practical advantages where they need and support each other. The method of this research was historical method consisting of heuristic method (the stage of searching and collecting data), internal criticism and external interpretation (interpreting historical facts), and historiography as the stage of writing a history.
The results found some conclusions about the history of the civilization of Maruyung mountain, and those conclusions included the physical heritage (the statue of Mungkal Banteng, Bumi Sagandu, Yoni, and Snake-twisted Human) and the non-physical heritage (spring of life or Cikahuripan). In addition, according to some sources (local story, Dutch archives, chronicle and ballad), Maruyung mountain was a place where all the Wali and queens in Java gathered before they occupied their own area. Then, the areas of Maruyung mountain became the main route and access which connected the areas in Java Island. There were also big battle and warin Maruyung where it finally became the hiding place of robbers and rogues.
