Language produces settings and utterances, an essential part of communication and language. In this research, the researcher conducts the study about deixis by focusing on the deixis used by the main character in a movie entitled Forrest Gump. There are three problems solved; 1. what are the types of the deixis used by the main character in Forrest Gump movie, 2. what are the functions of the types of deixis used, and why did the speaker use a particular deixis expression.
This study used a qualitative approach such as a natural setting, human instruments, and inductive analysis. The analysis in this study is descriptive-based because the researcher observes the utterances spoken by the main character in Forrest Gump Movie.
Based on research done by researchers, there are all types of deixis; person deixis, time deixis, spatial deixis, and social deixis. The most common deixis found is first person deixis 'I,' which is referred to the speaker, and the least used deixis is social. Each type of deixis has its function. Person deixis replaces the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd person while time deixis shows the adverb of time, place deixis to describe the place, and social deixis to show the social class. The main character's grammatical, formality, context, and situation data influence the use of expression deixis.
