Abstract

Aristania, Lulu Imelda, 1809010005. 2022: Multimodality Discourse Compositional
Metafunction COVID-19 Infographic Sphere Analysis. Undergraduate Thesis for
Sarjana Sastra Degree, English Department, Faculty of Sciences and Communication
Faculty , University of Muhammadiyah Purwokerto.
This research aims to find out about how visual elements of the selected COVID-19
infographics construct compositional meaning and how the verbal elements of
selected COVID-19 infographics. The researcher collects the data from WHO official
website from 2020 until 2022. In conducting this research, the researcher applied
theory of Compositional Metafunction to analyze the visual elements (Kress and van
Leeuwen, 2006) and Generic Structure Potential Analysis (Cheong, 2004) to analyze
the verbal elements.
The analysis reveals that, by analyzing the compositional metafunction, there is not
only a visual focus but also a variable number of multimodal elements that
contribute to the creation of various degress of salience through their different
sizes, colors, shape, position and communicative functions. The findings show that
images, like words, are organized to convey messages and make sense. It is also
widely accepted that the boundaries of discourse have been expanded beyond
clauses and sentences to color etc.
