Abstract

Rini, Enggar Setyo 1809010029. A Sociolinguistics Analysis of the Language Style Used by Characters with Different Social Classes; A Case Study in the Joker Movie Script. Undergraduate Thesis for Sarjana Sastra Degree, English Departement, Faculty of Letters, Universitas Muhammadiyah Purwokerto.
This research focuses on sociolinguistics analysis. This research aims to discover the language styles used by the characters from different social classes, the factors influencing the language styles from the conversation between characters, and how different social classes affect the language styles used by characters in the Joker movie. In analyzing this research, the researcher applied Chambers’ social class theory (1995) and the language style theory by Martin Joss (1976: 153-155). The data of the research is conducted from the Joker movie script. The research uses the descriptive qualitative method.
From the analysis, the researcher finds four kinds of language styles used by characters from different social classes in the Joker movie such as formal, consultative, casual, and intimate. The researcher also finds three kinds of social class in the characters: high, medium, and lower social class. The main character Joker with low social class status in this analysis has a variety of language styles, including formal (14%), consultative (18%), casual (41%), and intimate (27%). Casual style is the dominant language style used by Joker. Then, from the overall results of the analysis, formal style language is the most dominant language used by the characters. The dominance of formal language styles in the Joker movie is due to the many types of occupations that scriptwriters raise. The type of occupation in the Joker movie is mainly a type of middle social class; the rest have a type of work with a high and low social class type.
