Abstract

This study investigates the teacher's strategies in getting students' attention and then investigates why the teacher chooses a specific strategy for using learning methods to deliver English material during the pandemic of Covid-19. This study's participants are four English teachers from three different schools in the Banyumas and Purbalingga Regencies. The researchers conducted direct observations during the learning process as well as interviews with English teachers who served as resource persons. The qualitative survey method was used in this study. Researchers compiled a number of indicators based on observations and questions from four English teachers. Researchers discovered the same event during the online learning process in three different schools, namely, the learning process was less effective due to constraints on learning media, internet access, and the geographical location of the school. Furthermore, the activity displayed by students is limited to students who are engaged and enthusiastic about learning. These findings were supported by interviews with four teachers who had problems with the learning process and needed special strategies to get students' attention so that they could convey the material effectively. The strategies employed by the four teachers in this study differed depending on the student's condition and geographical location. The strategy employed is to begin the class with a general news discussion, translating songs and film subtitles, and delivering the material directly.
