Abstract

This research aims to describe the principles of language politeness in the utterances of the service section staff. This was descriptive qualitative research. There were 219 utterances of the service section staff atWangon Sub-district Office which were used as the research data. The data sources were two service section staff ofWangon Sub-district Office. This research was conducted through three stages; data providing, data analysis, and analysis result presentation. The stage of data providing was done using observation method with observation nonparticipatory technique. The data were analyzed using the pragmatic identity method with the basic technique of sorting determined elements. The results of the data analysis were presented informally using common words. The results of this study amounted to 219 utterances covering the compliance and violation of the principles of language politeness. There were 211 data that complied with the principles of politeness in the utterances of the service section staff. Of the six maxims stated by Leech, only 5 maxims were obeyed, namely the tact maxim (150 utterances), generosity maxim(31 utterances), modesty maxim (2 utterances), agreement maxim (11 utterances), and sympathy maxim (17 utterances). The compliance of the principles was mostly found in the form of tact maxim. While the violation of the principle of language politeness occurred in three maxims, namely tact maxim (one utterance), generosity maxim (three utterances), and sympathy maxim(three utterances).Most of the violations were in the form of generosity and sympathy maxim. It can be concluded that the service section staff has applied the principles of politeness well. This is in line with the service motto ofWangon Sub-district Office, namely 3S: Senyum, Sapa, Siap(Smile, Greet, Be Ready).
