Abstract
Indonesia has a prevalence about 18% of Indonesians experience dandruff problems. This prevalence includes high rates of dandruff compared to other Asian countries. The fungus that infects the scalp and causes dandruff is Pityrosporum ovale which is on the scalp causing dandruff, hair loss and itching on the scalp. One of the solutions to overcome the dandruff problem is keeping the cleanliness of the scalp by shampooing using anti-dandruff shampoo. The leaf of kersen (Muntingia calabura L.) contain some compounds wich have activity as an antifungal. The aim of this study was to determine the activity of antifungal shampoo and kersen leaf extract on P. ovale as a cause of dandruff. Ethanol extract of kersen leaves was tested for phenol content and total flavonoid levels by using UV-Vis spectrophotometry method. Preliminary test was carried out to determine the concentration of extract to be formulated using agar diffusion method with a series of concentrations of 5%, 10%, 15%, 20%, 25%, 30%, 35%, 40%. Furthermore, the shampoo formulation was tested for antifungal activity by agar diffusion method and the stability test preparation by cycling test method. The results were the kersen leaf ethanol extract containing of 14.52% b/b phenol and 6,32% b/b total flavonoids. The preliminary test obtained concentration with moderate inhibitory power at concentrations of 25%, 30%, and 35%,and in the 25% of antifungal activity test of extract shampoo had an inhibitory diameter of 6,070 mm, aconcentration of 30% had an inhibitory diameter of 7,058 mm and a concentration of 35% had a diameter inhibition of 8,129 mm. The results of stability tests showed that all stocks were stable in storage.
