Abstract

This research was rationalized by today's phenomenon of the lack of politeness performed by students when interacting with peers or teachers at school. By seeing this problem, the improvement of the politeness character education was urgently needed to conduct. This research was aimed at investigating and analyzing the implementation of politeness character education in SD Muhammadiyah 1 Banjarnegara. This research applied the descriptive qualitative approach. The data were collected through interviews, observations, and documentation. The triangulations by techniques and by sources were used to validate the data. The data were analyzed both descriptively and qualitatively using Miles and Huberman technique. The results of the research showed that the school conducted a self-development program to implement the politeness character education through the followings techniques: (1) school's routines which were in the form of students' habituation to greet others, instructions related to politeness values during ceremonies and gatherings, Dhuha and Dzuhur prayer, and class checking; (2) spontaneous activities in the form of advice; (3) exemplary; and (4) facility providence. Moreover, the school integrated the politeness values to each subject and conducted 5S culture (Senyum, Salam, Sapa, Sopan, dan Santun). The development of the learning process was conducted both in the classroom and in the school. However, there were some obstacles coming from the external factors such as students' neighborhood, parents, peers, and the development of science and technology (IPTEK). The obstacles were solved by the home-visit program where class teachers could visit students' home. The results of the implementation of politeness character education on students could be observed referring to the indicators formulated in the form of students' behavior or act in the classroom and in the school.
