The purpose of this research was to describe the types of directive
illocutionary speech acts that were contained in the dialogue of the characters in the
Jembatan Pensil movie by Director Hasto Broto. This research used qualitative
descriptive approach. The data source of this research was the characters of the
Jembatan Pensil movie. The research stage was divided into three, namely data
provision, data analysis, and presentation of data analysis results. At the stage of
providing the data, the researcher used the observation method in the form of
observation nonparticipatory technique (SBLC) and a note-taking technique. The data
of this research were then analyzed using the distributional and comparative methods.
The distributional method had two techniques, namely, the Immediate
Constituent(BUL) technique with the second advanced technique was read-marker
reading technique. Furthermore, the identity method had two techniques, namely the
basic technique in the form of the comparative referential method with dividing-keyfactors
technique (PUP), and the advanced technique was in the form of the
equalizing technique (HBS). Based on the results of the analysis and discussion, there
were directive illocutionary speech acts in the dialogues of the Jembatan Pensil movie
characters including (1) 9 request speech acts (asking and inviting), (2) 8 speech acts
in form of questions, (3) 4 requirements (ordered) speech acts, (4) 3 prohibitives
(prohibited) speech acts, (5) 3 permissive (allowed) speech acts, and (6) 3 advisories
(advised) speech acts.
