This study aims to prove whether there is any difference in students writing
skills on personal letter of the seventh grade of SMP Negeri 9 Banjar between before
the use of contextual teaching strategies and after contextual teaching strategies. The
research design used was quasi-experimental with one group pretest-posttest method.
There are two variables in this study, namely the independent variable in the form of
learning to write personal letters by applying contextual teaching learning strategies
and the dependent variable in the form of personal letter writing skills in class VII A,
SMP Negeri 9 Banjar after applying contextual teaching strategies . The sample of the
study is the students of class VII A. The data of students pretest and posttest tests are
used to collect the data. The validity of the instrument used was content validity with
expert judgment. The data analysis technique was performed using t-test. From the
calculation of pretest and posttest data using the t-test formula, it obtained t count =
8.60, then the results were consulted in a table with db 28 and a significance level of
5% for testing one tail, t table = 2.048. So t count t table, so the hypothesis of the
differences in students achievement before and after the implementation of contextual
teaching strategies in improving the personal letter writing skills of the seventh
graders of SMP Negeri 9 Banjar are accepted.
