The study was aimed at describing the contextual meaning in the discourse of traffic signs on the roads of Purwokerto, Banyumas regency. It was a qualitative study. The data were the sentenes in the discourse of traffic signs. The data sources were traffic signs. The study was divided into three stages, namely (1) the data provision, (2) the data analysis, and (3) the data presentation. There are four stages in the data provision stage, namely a) documentation, b) collecting data by note-taking, c) sorting data, and d) organizing data. in this stage, recording and note-taking techniques were conducted because in this case, the use of written language was also discussed. The data analysis used a distributional method with segmenting immediate constituents technique and the advanced technique was the inserting technique. The data were then analyzed using the equivalent method with the dividing-key-factors technique and the advanced technique was equalizing technique. In the data presentation stage, the results were presented using informal methods. The results of this study revealed that there were 24 traffic signs discourse as the data based on the type of contextual meaning. There were 8 sentences of warning, 2 sentences of commands, 4 sentences of prohibitions, 4 sentences of directing, 6 sentences of appeal. The contextual meaning was related to directive speech acts in the discourse of traffic signs in Purwokerto, Banyumas regency.
