Abstract

Students' mathematical communication competence is aspects that need to
be developed in learning mathematics. The purpose of this study was to obtain a
description of the mathematical communication competence of grade IV students
OF SD Negeri 1 Sanguwatang in mathematics learning. This was qualitative
research. The subjects of this study were 24 grade IV students of SD Negeri 1
Sanguwatang who were divided into three groups according to their competence,
namely high, moderate, and low competences. The data in this study were
collected using observation, tests, interviews, and documentation. Students'
mathematical communication competence was measured based on indicators of
mathematical communication competence namely (1) connecting real objects,
pictures and diagrams into mathematical ideas; (2) explaining mathematical
ideas, situations, and relations, in spoken and in written using real objects,
pictures, graphics, and algebraic expressions; (3) expressing everyday events in
language or mathematical symbols or constructing a mathematical model of an
event. The results of this study showed (1) subjects with high competence had
quite good mathematical communication competence on each indicator 1, 2, and
3; (2) subjects with moderate competence also had good mathematical
communication competence on indicator 2 but they were below par on indicators
1 and 3; and (3) low-competence subjects had poor mathematical communication
skills on each indicator.
