This study aims to describe the influence of students' interest in reading fiction books towards their ability to write short stories in grade IX at SMP Negeri 2 Kutasari in the academic year of 2019-2020. The research used a quantitative descriptive approach; the researcher described the phenomenon as it is by presenting data in a systematic, factual, and accurate manner. The research method used is ex post facto. The sampling technique applied was the simple random sampling technique. The number of respondents was 57 students. The data collection technique used questionnaires and tests. This research used descriptive statistical analysis techniques. The results show that the variable of interest of reading fiction books was classified as fond (63.2%), while the variable of the ability to write short stories was classified as sufficient (47.37%). The results of hypothesis testing with regression obtained t-count = 2.489 t-table = 2.004 (at the 5% significance level). This shows that there is an influence of students reading fiction interest in their ability to write short stories. The amount of determination coefficient is 0.101 or equal to 10.1%. Thus, the variable of interest in reading fiction books contributed 10.1% to the short story writing ability variable. The remaining 89.1% is influenced by other factors that were not examined.
