This study aims to describe the types and functions of deixis contained in short
stories of the Sunday newspaper of Suara Merdeka in the January 2020 edition. This
is a type of qualitative descriptive. The data in this study are sentences containing
deixis in short stories in the January 2020 edition of the Sunday newspaper of Suara
Merdeka. The data sources in this study are the short stories in the Junior and Serat
rubrics in the January 2020 edition of the Suara Merdeka newspaper. At the stage of
data provision, it used observation nonparticipatory method. At the stage of analyzing
the data, it used distributional method and equivalent method with the substitution
technique and dividing the key-factors technique. The stage of presenting the results
of data analysis is presented in the form of a report. The results showed that there
were 140 deixis divided into 103 person deixis, 12-time deixis, 14 place deixis, 6
discourse deixis, and 5 social deixis.
