Abstract

This study aimed to describe the mathematical literacy skills of students of SMP Negeri 2 Padamara viewed from the students' previous mathematics achievement. The subjects of this study were students of grade VIII A by purposive sampling technique. Students were grouped into 3 based on the students' mathematics achievement obtained previously; students with high, medium and low mathematics achievement consisted of 2 students each. The data analysis technique employed qualitative research methods which included data reduction, data presentation, and conclusions. The data collection method in this study utilized a test consisting of 3 description questions, each of which measured all indicators of mathematical literacy skills, interviews, and documentation. This study implemented a technical triangulation test as data validation. The results of this study revealed that students with high mathematical achievement presented mathematical literacy skills by being able to meet all indicators. Students with moderate mathematics achievement showed mathematical literacy skills by being able to fulfill two indicators of mathematical literacy skills; being able to implement mathematical concepts, facts, procedures, and reasoning in problems; and being able to interpret problems. Students with low mathematics achievement presented mathematical literacy skills by showing one indicator of mathematical literacy skills; interpreting problems.
