Abstract

This research belongs to Research and Development (R&D). It aims to investigate
the students’ needs related to the developed materials, to find out the validity of the
developed materials based on expert validation and to identify the students’ response
about the developed materials.
The subjects of the research were the first year students of STIE Muhammadiyah
Cilacap. The research procedure was adapted from the research procedure proposed by
Borg and Gall (1983) and materials development procedure from Jolly and Bolitho in
Tomlinson (1998). The steps of this research were conducting the needs analysis,
developing a course grid, designing materials, asking for expert judgment, and writing
the final draft. There were two methods of collecting data used in this research. Those
were questionnaire and semi-structured interview. Questionnaires were undertaken to
investigate students’ needs to the ESP materials before it was developed, to identify the
expert’s judgment on the materials developed and to find out students’ response to the
developed materials. Semi-structured interviews were conducted to find out stakeholders’
opinion about students’ need on the ESP materials before it was developed. The data was
analyzed in two ways. The interviews result were analyzed qualitatively by explanation,
whereas the questionnaire result were analyzed using descriptive statistics.
After the phase of need analysis, the next step was developing the materials. The
materials were developed using a communicative approach with the misture of contentbased
and task-based instruction. Four chapters were developed in this research. Each
chapters consists of tasks ranging from 15-20 tasks. Each chapter was divided into the
parts of pre-activity, reading and vocabulary activity, listening activity, speaking activity
and structure and written expression.
As the materials had been developed, the next step was identifying expert
judgment and students’ response to the developed materials. The result of the expert is
that overall, the materials is is categorized ‘”very good”. It is indicated by the mean (
