Abstract

Indonesia ranks second after Brazil in terms of biodiversity. Each ethnic group has a diversity of traditional knowledge related to the use and management of biodiversity. The unavailability of information, identification and documentation of research conducted in Pasawahan District, Kuningan Regency, West Java Province regarding the use of plants as medicine for bone and joint disease is the background of this study. This type of research is a descriptive survey conducted by semi-structured interviews with 12 informants at the research location with informant selection techniques using purposive sampling. The data obtained were analyzed qualitatively by interpreting the results of the interview. The results showed that in the Pasawahan District, 36 plant species had been documented which were divided into 25 families. The most frequently used families are Zingiberaceae (11.11%), Poaceae (8.33%), and Piperaceae (8.33%). The most processing method is boiled (67%). The content of active compounds in plants that are most often used to treat bone and joint disease in Pasawahan District includes flavonoids in ciplukan herbs to treat hyperuricemia, curcumin content in turmeric to treat osteoarthritis and also content phosphorus found in aloe vera plants to treat osteoporosis. Plants that require further research to treat bone and joint disorders include lemongrass, bay leaves, areca nut, garlic, cat whiskers, tongue-in-law, meniran, mimosa, alang reeds, mangosteen peel, pineapple, binahong, male papaya, red betel, betel, temuireng, ginger, turmeric, tempuyung and gotu kola.
