Prevention of hypertension needs to be done by all hypertensive patients so that there is no more severe increase in blood pressure. Compliance with taking medication in patients with hypertension is very important because taking antihypertensive drugs regularly can control blood pressure in people with hypertension. Barriers in the treatment of hypertension are caused by patients who are negligent, do not listen to the advice of doctors or pharmacists, lack of knowledge and understanding in taking medication and lack of knowledge about the right drugs.
Objective: To determine the effect of hypertension education on knowledge and adherence to drug use in the elderly with hypertension in the Pekuncen Health Center Work Area.
Methods: This research is a pre-experimental research with a one-group pretest-posttest research design. The sampling technique was consecutive sampling with 15 patients with hypertension. The research instrument used a questionnaire. Data analysis used paired t-test and Wilcoxon test.
Results: The results showed that the respondents' knowledge before being given education had an average score of 15.53. The respondent's compliance before being given education had an average score of 6.67. Knowledge of respondents after being given education has an average score of 17.4. The respondent's compliance after being given education had an average score of 8. There was an effect of hypertension education on knowledge and adherence to drug use in the elderly with hypertension in the Pekuncen Health Center Work Area with a p-value <0.05.
Conclusion: Hypertension education has an effect on knowledge and adherence to drug use in the elderly with hypertension in the Pekuncen Health Center Work Area.
