Abstract

The English language, which today is viewed as the most international language, becomes even more central than it has ever been. In the field of foreign language learning, English has been the prevailing foreign language in the curricula of educational institutions. For language learners’, there are two aspects that play key roles in their success of language learning; attitude and motivation. Thus, this study aims to find out the attitude and motivation of a group of Indonesian junior high school students towards English in hope of adding further data and generalization to the overall study of attitude and motivation towards English learning. To achieve the objectives of this study, a survey research design was chosen with an online questionnaire as the primary instrument. Five junior high schools (2 public & 3 private) in Purwokerto were selected as the population with a sample size of 27.53% (802 students). The survey found out that the participants have an overall positive attitude (mean of 3.4 or high), though with moderate mean values on various aspects. The study also revealed that the students were motivated (overall mean 3.9 or high) to learn English. As previously mentioned, the respondents were unsure how to feel on numerous aspects of the attitude towards the language. Therefore, even with the generally positive survey results, especially related to the students’ motivation in learning the language, the researcher thinks that there are some aspects needed to be improved in the overall process of English language learning in Indonesia.
