Abstract

The aim of this study was to obtain a description of mathematical communication skills viewed from the self-confidence of eight grade E students at SMP Negeri 2 Pulosari. This study used the descriptive qualitative method. The study contained 3 main stages in the procedure including the preparation stage, the implementation stage, and the data analysis stage. In this study, students were divided into 3 categories, namely high self-confidence, moderate self-confidence, and low self-confidence. 3 students were taken to be research subjects for each category. Data collection techniques used in this study were: tests and interviews. The results of the study show that: (a) students having high self-confidence can describe daily problems into correct and consistent mathematical language; and compile steps to solve mathematical problems in a coherent manner; (b) students having moderate self-confidence can describe everyday problems into correct and consistent mathematical language; (c) students having low self-confidence can only change the problems given into mathematical language but the language is not consistent.
