Abstract

The research, entitled "Developing English Textbook Based on Contextual Approach for the Second Grade Elementary Students of Al Irsyad Al Islamiyyah 02 Elementary School of Purwokerto" is a research type of development research (R & D). The research was conducted in Al Irsyad Al Islamiyyah Elementary school 02 Purwokerto. The subject of the research is the textbook of English for second grade of Al Irsyad Al Islamiyyah Elementary School 02 of Purwokerto. This research aims to know the development of English textbook based on the contextual approach in Al Irsyad Al Islamiyyah 02 Elementary School of Purwokerto, to measure the validity of the developed textbook based on expert’s judgement, and to describe the teachers ‘responses to the developed English textbook based on the contextual approach. The procedures to produce the English textbook based on a contextual approach are as follows: a) the analysis stage; b) design stage; c) development stage; d) implementation stage; and e) evaluation stage. Based on experts’ validity, overall the developed textbook is valid and eligible to be used for teaching the second grade students. The validity is achieved after two times validation. The first validation results required some revisions, and the second validation results has met the standard. Teachers' responses to English textbooks developed based on a contextual approach are very positive. It can be seen from the results of the response score, which reached 97.5% with a very good category. The response from the English teacher II also stated that the second grade English textbook based on a contextual approach was very positive too. It is indicated from the results of the response score showing a score of 92.5% with a very good category. So, it can be concluded that the second grade English textbook based on a contextual approach is very feasible to use.
